You’ve got your models assembled and you’ve registered for your first Warhammer 40K event. You’re ready to dive into this amazing community—but now comes the big question: what to pack for your first Warhammer 40K tournament? Sure, everyone knows you need your army and rules, but there are a lot of other items that can make your day (or weekend) easier, smoother, and more enjoyable. Let’s break it down.

Core Gaming Essentials
Aside from your army itself, these are the must-have items to play in the event:
- Dice – Bring plenty of six-sided dice. I recommend high-quality sets from Baron of Dice—they even make custom Warhammer 40K dice. Aim for at least 10–20 dice for fast rolling.
- Tape Measure – A reliable tape measure is critical for movement, range checks, and distances.
- Army Rules – Have your army’s rules handy, either digitally (via the Warhammer app) or physically. Make sure they’re the latest versions, including FAQs and errata (check Warhammer Community under Downloads).
- Army List – Most events post lists in Best Coast Pairings or another tournament app, but always keep a printed copy to share with opponents.
- Mission Rules – Bring the current mission pack (such as the Chapter Approved 2025 Mission Pack), including cards for Primaries and Secondaries.
- Carrying Tray – You’ll need something to transport your army between rounds. People use everything from cookie sheets to elaborate display boards.
- Objective Markers – Don’t count on the event or your opponent to supply these. Always bring your own set.
Nice-to-Have Items

These extras aren’t strictly required, but they’ll make your tournament experience much easier:
- Rolling Cart – My #1 recommendation for events. With shelves to carry your army, dice, and gear, it makes moving between tables effortless.
- Chess Clock – Essential if you’re getting serious about competitive play. Start practicing with one before events.
- Tokens – Handy for tracking abilities, buffs, or Battleshock. Notebook or Tablet – Use it for scoring apps like Tabletop Battles, referencing rules, or jotting notes for post-game improvement.
- Laser Pointer – Perfect for checking line of sight without bending down constantly.
- Army Carrying Case – If you plan to travel, invest in a sturdy case. The Jucoci Large Transport Case is affordable and reliable, but the Medium version is better if you need airline carry-on dimensions (22 x 14 x 9 inches). Remember to magnetize your bases for transport.
- Backpack – Keep your smaller essentials (dice bags, tokens, tape measures, etc.) organized and close at hand.
- Phone Charger or Power Bank – With constant scoring, rules checks, and normal phone use, your battery will drain fast. A portable charger is a lifesaver.
Personal Care Items
Tournaments are long, physically demanding days. Don’t underestimate how much self-care matters:
- Water Bottle – Stay hydrated throughout the event (start hydrating a couple days before).
- Snacks – Protein-packed snacks like peanuts, beef jerky, or protein bars will keep your energy and focus steady.
- Deodorant – You’ll be standing and moving around for 10–12 hours. Freshen up between rounds—it’s good for you and your opponents.
- Painkillers/OTC Meds – Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or similar are useful, especially if you have sore joints after long days (like me!).
- Comfortable Shoes – Thick-soled shoes are a must. Flip-flops might sound comfortable, but your feet and knees will thank you later for better support.
Final Thoughts
It might seem like a lot at first, but being prepared is the best way to set yourself up for success. When deciding what to pack for your first Warhammer 40K tournament, think beyond just your models. These essentials, nice-to-have tools, and personal care items will make your day far smoother and let you focus on what matters: playing the game and having fun.
Before heading out, make a checklist and go through it the night before. That way, you’ll arrive confident, organized, and ready to roll dice.
