If you’re new to competitive 40K one of the best ways you can improve your game is by joining a competitive 40K team. Finding a group of like minded players who share your passion for playing the game at a competitive level can be a rewarding experience. From list refinement to practice sessions and more, being part of a competitive 40K team is a great opportunity to improve on the tabletop.

What is a Competitive 40K Team?
A competitive 40K team is a- well- just that! A group of like-minded players who share a passion for playing Warhammer 40K at a competitive level. From singles events to even team events like ATC, competitive 40K teams are great for building confidence and camaraderie.
Competitive 40K teams have become more and more popular over the years especially as the popularity of team events has exploded onto the tournament scene.
Why Should I Join a Competitive 40K Team?
As I mentioned above, joining a competitive 40K team can be a great way to improve your skills as a player. Whether you’re new to the game or an established veteran, joining a competitive 40K team can be beneficial.
Here’s some of the main benefits of joining a competitive 40K team:
- List building and refinement
- Regular practice partners
- A consistent feedback loop for improving
- Setting and achieving goals together
- Friends to travel to events with
My own team, Scions of War, was formed in 2020 as a competitive travel team representing our local club. Over the years we have traveled together to many regional events in the southeastern U.S. Our team’s mission is to provide our opponents with the best gaming experience possible as quality competitors who carry ourselves with dignity and respect for both the hobby and our fellow players.
Over the years we have formed a Discord server to arrange practice games, go over list ideas and talk about lessons learned post-event. We meet regularly to practice and prepare for events.
It is important to find a team that aligns with your goals as a player. For example, with Scions of War, we approach the game with our main focus to be good quality competitors for our opponents. We want to be known for our quality sportsmanship, hobbying and our skill on the tabletop. We don’t focus on trying to win every game or event we attend, but being good ambassadors for the game and representing our community in a positive way.
That isn’t to say we don’t focus on being great players, because we certainly do, but we take an all around approach to the game. We push each other to be better hobbyists as well as being the best competitors we can be.
How Can I Find a Competitive 40K Team?
The best place to start is by looking near your local area. If you’re in a large metro area, for example, there are likely tons of teams near you. Reach out to their players, introduce yourself and ask if you can join them. Most competitive 40K teams are always open to considering new members.
You can search local Facebook groups or go ask at your local game store. Reach out to your local community and network with them.
Can’t find a team? Maybe consider creating your own. Establish your team’s goals and try to find other players in the area to join.
Chances are, if you ask around you will either find a local team to consider, or other players interested in joining you in starting a team.
