Welcome to another Top 10 Warhammer 40K Lists article, the monthly overview from Grimhammer Tactics covering the top performing Warhammer 40K lists for the month.

See all previous versions and the current edition of my Top 10 Warhammer 40K lists here.

September was a wild ride of a month in Competitive 40K with the release of the Q3 2025 Balance Dataslate. The meta has started to shape up with nerfs to Thousand Sons and Death Guard as well as points increases on both Chaos and Imperial Knights. In this month’s article, I’ll be focusing on the Top 10 competitive Warhammer 40K lists for September since the release of the Q3 2025 Balance Dataslate. It should be noted also that the Las Vegas Open 2025 Warhammer 40K Champs event is kicking off today as well and there’s sure to be some interesting builds that rise to the top by weekend’s end. With that, let’s get into the top 10 competitive Warhammer 40K lists for September 2025.

Top 10 competitive 40k lists September 2025

1. John Lennon – Space Marines – Crucible GT 2025

I wrote about this list in last week’s Monday Meta Review. Here we see John Lennon once again piloting Space Marines to victory in a major event. Featuring the new Shadowmark Talon Detachment and Aethon Shaan, this list has tons of tricks and versatility. John piloted this list as the master tactician he is to the top placing at Crucible GT.

2. Kjetil Andre Liknes – Ad Mech – Invasion 2025 40K

Ad Mech got a huge glow up in the Q3 Balance Dataslate and here we see their first major event win post-Balance Dataslate. Kjetil is no stranger to top finishes of course, and pilots this Ad Mech list masterfully to an undefeated record in Norway’s biggest 40K singles event. Taking full advantage of the update to Cawl’s datasheet abilities granting full hit re-rolls against an enemy unit once per turn, complimented by massive board control with 3 squads of 10 Ruststalkers, this list packs a lot of great shooting and board control. Ad Mech certainly looks to become a dominating force the rest of the way in 2025.

3. Innes Wilson – World Eaters – Doonhammer 2025

Innes pilots the Berzerker Warband to success taking the top spot in this 100+ player event going undefeated. With two 20 man Khorne Berserkers squads leading the way, this list is hard hitting and fast. With over 30 players at LVO this year, World Eaters also look to be set to make a huge splash in the meta post-Balance Dataslate.

4. Joe Camacho – Tyranids – War in the Wastelands

Oh the usual suspects it seems. A couple of Trygons, Lictors, Zoanthropes just your typical Subterranean Assault…wait…this is…Vanguard Onslaught?! That’s right! Joe Camacho pilots this unique Tyranids build to an undefeated finish at War in the Wastelands GT. Vanguard Onslaught has been like a puzzle for Tyranids players since the release of the Codex. It should be great but…somehow just falls short. It appears Joe has solved this puzzle. Congratulations to him for taking this interesting build all the way to the top finish at a GT event.

5. Druchii – Adeptus Sororitas – Hammer Cup 2nd Edition

We’ve seen a rise to Adeptus Sororitas since the Q3 Balance Dataslate sitting at a 59% win rate. Here we see Druchii take this army to an undefeated finish in France at the Hammer Cup 2nd Edition. Although he did not finish in 1st place, he manages to take the Champions of Faith to a 5-0 finish and 2nd place. Sisters are right up there with Ad Mech in terms of win rates presently and look to be making a giant impact on the meta post-Q3 Balance Dataslate. It will be interesting to see how far they go at LVO this weekend as well.

6. Nainfa – Aeldari – Hammer Cup 2nd Edition

I wrote about this list over on this week’s Monday Meta Review post (which came late thanks to the London GT finals being played on Monday). Here we see Aeldari Aspect Host goodness taking the top spot at Hammer Cup 2nd Edition. Aeldari have been dubbed the top of the meta mountain by the “experts” and with some of their natural predators getting nerfed, Aeldari certainly do indeed look to be on the rise. Their staggering 2.91 over-rep is also a bit concerning. I fully expect Aeldari to be among the top tables at this weekend’s LVO when the dust settles.

7. Bill Paterson – Necrons – Doonhammer 2025

Bill has constructed a very interesting Awakened Dynasty list featuring Silent King along with the usual assortment of Necron Characters. Awakened Dynasty continues to perform well at events even in this new meta. Good on Bill taking this list to a 5-0 record at Doonhammer and finishing in 4th place.

8. Shaun Delaney – Blood Angels – Doonhammer 2025

Staying with the Doonhammer event we see an undefeated 5-0 Blood Angels list that also barely missed the top cut. Shaun’s list is a Liberator Assault Group build featuring the usual suspects of Sanguinary Guard, Jump Pack Intercessors, Rage Captain and Assault Intercessors and Death Company units backed up by 2 Ballistus Dreads for fire support. This list is fast and hits hard setting up key go-turns to cripple the enemy with Lemartes and a Death Company brick arriving via Rapid Ingress.

9. loukas – Genestealer Cults – TOURNOI DES TROIS FRONTIERES

Think GSC and Host of Ascension are dead in the water? Think again. Loukas takes the Host to an undefeated record (although he did receive a Draw) going 4-0-1 but good enough to win this 70 player event in France. This list features some of the usual Host units we are used to seeing from builds popularized by Innes, but dials back on the big 20 man bricks instead trading them out for smaller 10 man units. Many thought Host of Ascension was DoA after the Balance Dataslate (myself included) but we see that in the hands of a skilled player this army is still a contender.

10. Liam Vsl – Chaos Space Marines – London GT

Liam Vsl strikes again taking his third London GT victory in a row, this time featuring an off-meta Veterans of the Long War build focusing on assault shenanigans with Warp Talons and the ever powerful full 6″ reactive move stratagem, Liam takes his Heretics all the way to a 10-0 finish at this 1000+ player event.

Final Thoughts

It’s good to see a large assortment of factions taking big finishes in the Q3 Balance Dataslate meta. While Ad Mech, Sisters and Aeldari seem to have a strong foothold at the top of Faction Win Rates presently, there’s still plenty of variety at the top levels of play, and this meta may be the most healthy it’s been in quite a long while.

The world will be paying close attention to the LVO this weekend to see who comes out on top. All in all it’s a great time for competitive Warhammer 40K.
